A balanced approach to risk
The energy transition needs a balanced approach to safety and health risk. In our view, this means:
- A fair and realistic assessment of risks and benefits, their probability and the societal benefits of the activity
- Understanding of the context, including the risks and benefits of existing technology
- Establishing explicitly the permitted levels of residual risk
- Handling uncertainty in an alert and adequate manner
- Being careful but not overly cautious, thus enabling beneficial new technology
- Taking public perceptions into account, provided they are properly researched
- Willingness to communicate about policy decisions, including the pros and cons, in a frank and realistic way
- Awareness of distortions in the public risk debate
